Kim Ji-won of the new SBS Friday-Saturday drama ‘Doctor X: Era of the White Mafia’ revealed the reason why she is returning as ‘Gye Su-jeong’ after 2 years.

The new SBS Friday-Saturday drama ‘Doctor X: Era of the White Mafia’ (produced by Studio S, Studio Dragon, HighZium Studio / hereinafter 'Doctor X'), scheduled to air its first episode on October 9 (Fri), is a refreshing medical noir depicting the activities of Doctor X ‘Gye Su-jeong,’ a ‘madhouse accountant’ who breaks down massive injustices with genius surgical skills that know neither failure nor compromise. It is garnering anticipation as the first medical genre entry in the ‘SBS Cathartic Universe,’ which continues a unique streak of hits with ‘Agent Kim Reactivated,’ ‘Taxi Driver,’ ‘The Fiery Priest,’ and ‘The Judge from Hell.’ Additionally, it is drawing intense interest as director Lee Jeong-rim, who directed the dramas 'VIP', 'Revenant', and 'As You Stood By', joins forces with the industry-watched writer Pyeon Seong-geun, and is joined by a powerful lead cast that viewers can trust, including Kim Ji-won (as Gye Su-jeong), Lee Jung-eun (as Jang Hui-suk), Son Hyun-joo (as Bu Seung-gwon), and Kim Woo-seok (as Park Tae-gyeong).

Regarding the reason she chose ‘Doctor X’ as her comeback work, Kim Ji-won stated, “The gap between Gye Su-jeong's outward appearance and the side of her that you discover more of the more you look into her was charming, and I wanted to express that charm well.” She further added an affectionate character interpretation, increasing curiosity, saying, “Gye Su-jeong is a person who has exiled herself into darkness and clung only to her surgical skills (a term referring to a doctor's manual dexterity or art). While the title of ‘genius surgeon’ might seem to suit her in the eyes of others, looking at the path Gye Su-jeong has walked, I felt she was not so much a ‘genius’ but rather a person who has done her best with a desperate heart.”

Furthermore, Kim Ji-won drew attention by pointing out the difference between Gye Su-jeong and existing medical drama protagonists as the ‘way of conveying a sense of mission.’ She noted, “If a sense of justice and mission are commonalities among protagonists in medical dramas, Gye Su-jeong's way of expressing this is different. Because she focused most of her abilities on surgical skills, she is a character who is somewhat clumsy in emotional areas such as social skills and flexibility.” She then revealed the key point of the character, increasing expectations for the birth of a new doctor character not seen in existing medical dramas, saying, “Unlike her perfect surgical skills, seeing Gye Su-jeong's lack of social skills made me laugh for some reason.
