Shinsegae Group announced on the 6th that Shinsegae Property will invest in Paramount's acquisition of Warner Bros. Skydance co-CEO David Ellison and the United States investment firm RedBird are also participating in the investment.
The group is envisioning ways to integrate the content intellectual property (IP) held by Paramount and Warner Bros. into its distribution and entertainment businesses. Plans were presented to create themed spaces and experiential facilities utilizing the relevant content at the theme park planned for Star Bay City in Hwaseong and at Starfield-affiliated complex shopping malls.
Cooperation in the over-the-top (OTT) field is also under review. The group stated that it is envisioning ways to expand its business by linking HBO Max and Paramount+ with affiliate memberships, as well as through the co-production or partnership of Korean original content. The group explained that the number of subscribers for HBO Max and Paramount+ exceeds 200 million.
This investment is interpreted as a move by Shinsegae Group to expand its business scope from retail-centered operations into the content field. However, actual business performance will depend on the progress of the acquisition and the specific scope of content utilization and partnerships.
