Lee Jung-eun of the new SBS Friday-Saturday drama ‘Doctor X’ raises expectations by directly revealing her affection for the work, her character interpretation, and her womance chemistry with Kim Ji-won.
The new SBS Friday-Saturday drama ‘Doctor X’ (produced by Studio S, Studio Dragon, HighZium Studio / hereinafter 'Doctor X'), scheduled to premiere on October 9 (Fri), is a refreshing medical noir depicting the activities of 'Doctor X' Gye Su-jeong, a 'madhouse genius in the operating room' who breaks down massive injustices with genius surgical skills that know neither failure nor compromise. It is drawing anticipation as the first medical genre entry in the 'SBS Cathartic Universe', which continues a unique streak of hits with 'Agent Kim Reactivated', 'Taxi Driver', 'The Fiery Priest', and 'The Judge from Hell'. Additionally, it is garnering intense interest as director Lee Jeong-rim, who directed the dramas 'VIP', 'Revenant', and 'As You Stood By', joins forces with the industry-watched writer Pyeon Seong-geun, and is joined by a powerful lead cast including Kim Ji-won (as Gye Su-jeong), Lee Jung-eun (as Jang Hui-suk), Son Hyun-joo (as Bu Seung-gwon), and Kim Woo-seok (as Park Tae-gyeong).
In the midst of this, the actress with irreplaceable acting depth, Lee Jung-eun, sets out to create a new life-defining character through ‘Doctor X’. The character Jang Hui-suk, played by Lee Jung-eun, is the director of a doctor placement agency who only cares about money. While she may appear to be a loud and talkative snob on the outside, she is actually a clever schemer who moves business with sly social skills.
First, regarding her decision to appear in ‘Doctor X’, Lee Jung-eun stated, “Beyond the genre-specific fun of a medical drama, I was deeply impressed by the point where human desire and the value of life collide through the existence of 'Doctor X' in the drama.”
She also shared the unique differences and charms of the character Jang Hui-suk. Lee Jung-eun explained, “While the characters I have mainly played in the past represented the warmth of our neighbors, Jang Hui-suk is a character who realistically shows the logic of capital and proves it on the front lines.” She further added, “While doctors fulfill their noble mission of saving lives, Jang Hui-suk views the 'people' handling those lives strictly as objects of business. She seems cold but is also a very realistic character, so I am very curious about how she will approach the viewers,” stimulating infinite curiosity about the new character created by the trusted actress Lee Jung-eun.
Furthermore, she explained the acting points intended to express the ambition and scheming side hidden behind Jang Hui-suk's sly exterior. Lee Jung-eun revealed, “I tried to give a sense of weight that is not light when it comes to business. I tried to express her as a person who smiles leisurely on the outside but is constantly running a calculator in unseen places,” raising expectations for the multi-dimensional side Jang Hui-suk will show.
An indispensable viewing point in ‘Doctor X’ is the unique ‘womance’ chemistry that Lee Jung-eun and Kim Ji-won will create. Lee Jung-eun gave a thumbs up to Kim Ji-won, with whom she acted, saying, “She is a wonderful colleague with truly solid and deep energy.” She continued, “Jang Hui-suk and Gye Su-jeong are tied together in a cold relationship called a contract, but within that, a complex and subtle compassion and bond exist. Every time I made eye contact with Ji-won while acting on set, I felt that emotional line being naturally filled.” She also praised, “Especially when Gye Su-jeong shows a chillingly deep immersion without losing her center even in a whirlwind of emotions, I marveled, 'As expected, she is an actor with great depth.' Since she is an actor who becomes deeper the more you know her, I definitely want to work with her again in the next project if given the chance,” boosting expectations for the perfect synergy the two will show.
She also did not forget to mention the tight teamwork with the fellow actors such as Son Hyun-joo and Kim Woo-seok. She expressed respect, saying, “Senior Son Hyun-joo always led the set with consideration and respect, while firmly holding the center so that juniors could act to their heart's content.” She continued to convey the hot atmosphere of the set, saying, “Young actors, including actor Kim Woo-seok, also breathed fresh energy with tireless passion,” and expressed strong confidence, saying, “I remember the times we spent in the corner of the set practicing lines together with the actors and constantly talking about the essence of the scene. I am certain that the fierce energy will be fully contained in the work.”
She also showed extraordinary trust in director Lee Jeong-rim, who took charge of the directing. Lee Jung-eun explained, “Director Lee Jeong-rim accurately points out the textures of a character's emotions even within a heavy narrative. Advice like, 'Director, instead of revealing emotions in this scene, how about delivering the lines more calmly?' was a great help in adding depth to the characters,” and added, “Thanks to the directing style that focuses on the essence without exaggeration, I was able to film enjoyably,” conveying her special harmony with director Lee Jeong-rim.
Finally, Lee Jung-eun explained the viewing point: “’Doctor X’ is a work that ultimately poses the heavy question, 'What kind of choices do humans make as they live?' within the framework of the medical genre.” Furthermore, she urged viewers to tune in, saying, “If you watch while following the dilemma faced by the genius doctor Gye Su-jeong, the brain games of the people moving the board behind the scenes, and the psychological changes of the characters evolving within the massive power structure, you will feel a deep sense of immersion. Since this is a work that the staff and actors have made with all their hearts for a long time, please give it much interest and affection.”
The most anticipated SBS Friday-Saturday drama of the second half of 2026, the refreshing genre master SBS ‘Doctor X’, will premiere on October 9 (Fri) at 9:50 PM.
