Stepping out, unexpected encounters - Western Canada
A surprise meeting with Putin?!... Exploring the primeval forests of Western Canada and experiencing 'logging sports'
Broadcast: Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 9:40 AM on KBS 1TV
This trip to Western Canada does not stop at following famous landmarks. By climbing mountains directly and riding logs, it steps further into the lives of people across the great nature. When stepping off the familiar paths, landscapes different from the Canada we knew appear. A journey of unique stories that would have been unknown if not visited will deliver another joy of travel to viewers. The story behind meeting 'Putin' during the trip and further details can be checked directly in the main broadcast of 'Walk Expedition'.
"Let's not just watch," the rocks of the Rockies
The first travel destination is Banff in the Canadian Rockies. Instead of just looking at these beautiful mountains, they decide to climb them directly. They take on the challenge of the 'Via Ferrata (Iron Path)' at Mount Norquay. Wearing safety equipment, they take step by step above the thousand-foot precipice. This is the starting point of this trip, themed "The Canada that is finally seen through direct confrontation."
Logs used for such diverse sports?
At the next destination, Squamish, they visit the scene of 'logging sports,' where the logging culture of Western Canada has transformed into a festival. From axe throwing to log sawing and rolling logs on water, matches that are true 'sports' unfold. And they also challenge themselves to climb logs directly. They encounter a scene where what was once a matter of survival in the past becomes today's culture, and that culture is passed on to the next generation.
Canada unfolding outside the window for 24 hours
Another way to properly meet Western Canada is by train. For about 24 hours from Jasper to Vancouver, they board a train that connects all of Canada and cross the Rocky Mountains. Sitting in a dome-shaped observation car and looking out the window, mountains and valleys continue endlessly, and sometimes massive mountain ranges envelop the train. At the moment when mobile phone signals are cut off, travelers face the vast landscape of Canada entirely.
The life of a person told by a single salmon
In Lillooet, they meet people who have lived breathing together beside the Fraser River. Here, salmon is not just food. It is a part of a long life of catching, cooking, drying, and storing what nature provides for the next life. They face the scene of catching salmon in a traditional way and taste the salmon caught that way directly. And through dried salmon and traditional instrument performances, they meet the time of people who have lived together with nature.
"What on earth is there that we must go this far?"
They visit Meares Island, which can only be reached by taking a boat from Vancouver and then traveling for a long time again by car. In the primeval forest untouched by human hands, massive trees that seem to cover the sky are densely packed. Standing before the 'Tree of Life' that has lived for a thousand years, the speed of the journey suddenly slows down. They have time to meet the forest that has continued life for a long time and the people of that forest. When stepping off the path, new landscapes appear, and there, they meet new people and new stories.
