Production company of ‘The Assassin(s)’ denies rumors of Chinese capital inflow

The production company of the film ‘The Assassin(s)’, Hive Media Corp, released an official statement on the 29th denying claims that Chinese capital flowed into the production and investment process of the work. The production company explained that they are clarifying the facts as related claims are spreading through online communities and some media outlets.

According to Hive Media Corp, ‘The Assassin(s)’ is a work independently planned and produced with domestic capital, led by domestic production teams and creators. The production company stated that they are aware of the various opinions and issues being raised surrounding the work, and that they respect criticisms and diverse opinions regarding the film. However, they added that matters concerning investment and production capital are issues that can be objectively verified, and expressed hope that information contrary to the facts would not spread further.

Previously, People Power Party lawmaker Joo Jin-woo claimed that a consortium involving a Chinese financial firm was pursuing an investment of 40 billion won in the film production process. Following this remark, claims were raised that Chinese capital had flowed into the work. The production company denied those claims in its official statement.

The film is also embroiled in political controversy as it uses the incident where the late First Lady Yuk Young-soo was targeted as its subject matter. According to the production company's explanation, the work is a feature film reconstructed by adding cinematic imagination based on various records written in relation to the historical event that occurred in 1974.

Hive Media Corp stated that ‘The Assassin(s)’ is not a film produced to newly establish a specific historical conclusion or to deny or distort existing facts. The production company conveyed its official position with the intent of asking for a distinction between opinions on the work and claims regarding investment and production capital.
