Movie ‘Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng’ releases stills and cheering video for D-50

According to media reports, the movie ‘Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng’ has released special stills and cheering videos from the actors to mark the D-50 countdown to the 2027 College Scholastic Ability Test. The work, starring Lee Sun-bin and Yoo Jae-myung, is scheduled for release on October 28.

The film is set in the question-setting headquarters, which is sealed for 40 days to create the College Scholastic Ability Test questions, a Grade 2 national secret in South Korea. It is a mission comedy about Maeng Bo-ram (Lee Sun-bin), a Korean language teacher from a small provincial city who joins the headquarters due to an administrative error and struggles to create "problem-free questions" that are free of typos and controversies. It deals with the College Scholastic Ability Test, which is familiar yet difficult to look into, from the perspective of the question setters.

The special stills capture Maeng Bo-ram resting her chin on her hand in front of a wall filled with memos. As an MZ-generation Korean language teacher who cares for her students and possesses passion, she adapts to the unexpected mission of being a question setter. A scene where the question setters gather around a meeting table late at night to share opinions was also released.

The veteran chairperson Moon Joo-yeol (Yoo Jae-myung), Maeng Bo-ram, and philosophy professor Go Jae-bong (Kim Kyung-min), who examines the Kant passage, review the questions together. The joy and sorrow of the process of completing the questions are captured in the scene where the question setters draw circles above their heads and cheer. The piles of question-setting materials in the meeting room and the characters contemplating the questions in different ways add to the comic atmosphere.

In a video for examinees and job seekers, Lee Sun-bin, Yoo Jae-myung, Kim Yeong-min, and Jeon Seok-ho appear as their characters in the movie to deliver cheering messages. Lee Sun-bin said, “The person who stays seated until the end wins,” and Yoo Jae-myung said, “Let's take on the challenge coolly.” Kim Yeong-min said, “If you know the reason, you won't get it wrong next time,” and Jeon Seok-ho conveyed, “One cell on the OMR is one cell of life.”
