Movie 'Lies: 4K Uncut Edition' to be released on November 11

The movie 'Lies' will return to theaters as an uncut complete edition 27 years after its release. The distributor Yeonghwaroun Brothers announced on the 29th that 'Lies: 4K Uncut Edition' will be released in theaters nationwide on November 11.

This work, released in 2000, deals with the love between a middle-aged married sculptor and a high school girl. The controversy over obscenity surrounding its unconventional setting and depictions of sexual acts escalated into a debate regarding art and freedom of expression. The Korea Media Rating Board made two decisions to withhold ratings, and the film was eventually released to audiences after undergoing processes such as the deletion of scenes.

The controversy began from the original novel. 'Lie to Me' was designated as a banned book in 1996, and the author Jang Jung-il was sentenced to imprisonment the following year on charges of manufacturing obscene material. After the movie's release, civic groups filed complaints against about 100 theater owners, and the United Nations Commission on Human Rights defined the work as 'child pornography' and recommended the suspension of screenings and the preparation of countermeasures.

This release is a case where uncensored theatrical screening is taking place for the first time in approximately 27 years. The screening version is the edition that the Korean Film Archive restored in 4K and utilized for overseas distribution.
