Canon's professional video production camera and lens lineup, the Cinema EOS System, has marked its 15th anniversary. Since its first unveiling in 2011, the system has expanded its range of use to include films, dramas, documentaries, live streaming, corporate video, and virtual production.
To date, Canon has released 17 types of Cinema EOS cameras and 53 types of Cinema EOS lenses. A key characteristic of the lineup is the continued focus on modular design and compact, lightweight builds, reflecting feedback from field professionals. This trend aims to enhance shooting convenience and equipment operational flexibility across the entire product range.
The catalyst for Canon's full-scale entry into the professional video market was the Full HD video recording capability of the EOS 5D Mark II, which was released in November 2008. Following this, Canon communicated with filmmakers to accumulate necessary field functions, expanding the lineup starting with the EOS C300 in 2012 to include the EOS C500, EOS C500 Mark II, EOS C300 Mark III, EOS R5 C, and EOS C50. Industry observers view this progression as more than simple product expansion, seeing it as a strengthening of system competitiveness to match changing filming methods.
The Cinema EOS System has gained technical recognition through its use in filming award-winning works at major film festivals. Notable examples include "All the Empty Rooms," the winner of the 2026 Academy Awards for Best Documentary Short Subject, and "All That Breathes," which won awards at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival.
