The film 'Mashville' will meet domestic audiences on October 28. Kitches Production announced the release schedule on the 1st. The work is directed by Hwang Uk and co-written by writer Im Dong-min.
According to media reports, 'Mashville' is a black comedy containing a Western atmosphere, which is rare in Korean cinema. The story begins as cult members wearing Hanbok enter the village. The followers intend to perform a ritual by gathering 12 corpses, representing everyone born from January to December.
In this process, the followers murder a farmer's close friend, and the farmer picks up a gun to eliminate them. Meanwhile, three brothers visit the problematic village to retrieve a container of poorly made moonshine.
The work received the Best Director award in Cheval Noir, a major competition section at the 28th Fantasia International Film Festival in 2024. It also won Best Picture at the YIFF in India, securing two awards. Since then, it has been officially invited to five international film festivals, including the Santa Fe International Film Festival in the United States, the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival in Japan, and the Almería Western Film Festival in Spain.
The American film media outlet Collider commented on 'Mashville' saying it is "the meeting of the Coen brothers and Tarantino." Jeon Sin-hwan, Park Jong-hwan, Kim Hyeong-gyun, Kim Hui-sang, and Hong Seong-o appear in the film, and the domestic release date is October 28.
