Park Jeong-eun's Experimental Music Drama 'I Miss You' at Seongnam Arts Center Ensemble Theater on October 17

Memory sometimes arrives without warning. Faces and times that have already passed, and emotions we thought we had forgotten, suddenly linger beside us again. A stage that unravels the paradoxical sense of memory—which moves away when we try to hold on and becomes clearer when we try to forget—will meet the audience through music, gestures, sound, and space.

The experimental music drama ‘I Miss You’, planned, directed, and composed by composer Park Jeong-eun, will be performed at the Seongnam Arts Center Ensemble Theater on Saturday, October 17, at 7 PM.

‘I Miss You’ is an experimental music drama that explores the sense of ‘Nostalgia’ through memory and longing, language and sound, and body and space. Centered on music, performance, contemporary dance, pansori, acting, interviews, and everyday objects intersect and overlap, unfolding scattered fragments of memory into a single sensory stage landscape.

“Whom do we miss, and what times do we long for?”

This work does not aim to simply reproduce past times or return to the past. It calls forth the senses and memories that have already disappeared but still remain within us into the present time and space, observing how they exist as meaning for us today.

‘Opening the door and walking in at any time. Bringing in a face that has already passed.’

The work begins from these attributes of memory. The movement of memory—becoming closer while moving away, and moving away the more closely one looks—is transformed into the relationship between music and bodily movement, speech and silence, and the stage space and objects.

In that process, the performance poses two questions to the audience: ‘Whom do we miss, and what times do we long for? When was the happiest moment within that time?’

As the accumulated memories and longings of individuals meet through the form of a musical drama, ‘I Miss You’ expands into a stage that evokes the memories of each audience member beyond the memory of a single person.

From contemporary music to pansori, dance, and acting... A stage crossing genre boundaries

A large number of artists from different genres will participate in this performance. Cha Jong-hyeon is in charge of choreography, and dancers Lee Jae-hyeon, Lee Jin-ha, and Namgung Jin-woo, along with actors Hwang Chae-rim and Han I-jae, will take the stage. Additionally, Moon Su-hyeon (pansori), Yoo Hyeon-su (piri), Jeon Yu-jeong (accordion), Song Jeong-hun (saxophone), Yoon Seung-ho (flute), Moon Ji-seung (percussion), Choi Min-seon and Kim Beom-sik (ajaeng), Hwang Su-bin (violin), Yoon Hye-seong (piano), Kim Dong-uk (guitar/vocals), and Lee Han-bin (electronic music) will participate.

Im Seong-yeol is in charge of sound, Han Hui-su of lighting, Shin Je-hyeon of art, and Lee Geon-u of the stage, collectively building the spatial and visual sensations of the work.

As Western instruments and Korean traditional instruments, electronic music and the human voice, and acting and contemporary dance meet on a single stage, each artistic element goes beyond a simple parallel combination to illuminate the common theme of ‘memory’ in different ways.

Composer Park Jeong-eun, composing the ‘entire performance’ beyond just music

Park Jeong-eun, who is in charge of the planning, directing, and composing of this work, graduated from Chugye University for the Arts and Hanyang University, then completed a Master's degree in Hannover, Germany, and the highest performer course in Dusseldorf. After returning to Korea in 2017, she began her domestic activities by premiering a large-scale ensemble work at the Asian Composers Showcase of the Tongyeong International Music Festival, and has since continuously presented works on domestic and international stages.

She has received awards such as 2nd place at the Siegburg Composition Competition, Special Prize at the Leibnitz Composition Competition, Paan Tree of Life Composer Award (2020), 1st Prize, Goethe Prize, and Audience Prize at the Asian Composers Showcase, and the Porsche Frontier Award at the Seoul Arts Awards (2026).

Recently, she has been continuing her work in experimental music drama, combining various artistic genres such as video, movement, text, and acting with music, moving beyond traditional concert formats. ‘I Miss You’ also shows an attempt to organize not only sound but also movement, language, and the entire stage space into a single work as an extension of these efforts.

Park Jeong-eun's works are currently being published by Helbling Verlag in Germany and Edition Avantus, and she is balancing creation and education by lecturing at Chugye University for the Arts, Dankook University, Sookmyung Women's University, Universidad Kookmin, and Chung-Ang University.

The experimental music drama ‘I Miss You’ will be performed at the Seongnam Arts Center Ensemble Theater on October 17 at 7 PM, and it will be held with all seats being complimentary. It is hosted by Park Jeong-eun, managed by Hyundai Culture Planning, and supported by the Seongnam Cultural Foundation and Seongnam Arts Center.
