Yoo Hae-jin: “If it were the original scenario for ‘The Assassin(s)’, I wouldn't have been able to appear”

Actor Yoo Hae-jin confessed that he had no choice but to be cautious before appearing in the movie ‘The Assassin(s)’.

The work is based on the First Lady sniper incident that shocked South Korea on August 15, 1974.

In a recent interview held at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Yoo Hae-jin said, “I felt a sense of pressure, thinking, ‘This incident?’”

He stated, “So I read the scenario page by page very carefully. After reading it all, I spoke specifically with the director about the parts I felt.”

He continued, “If he had told me to do it exactly as the scenario was first delivered to me, I don't think I could have appeared,” and explained, “I delivered my opinions regarding the parts I was cautious about, and the director accepted them. Through many subsequent revisions, it became an open story rather than a direct one. Since the incident itself is something everyone knows, I thought it would be okay, and that is how I came to join the work.”

Yoo Hae-jin also said, “I liked the feeling of fitting things together one by one like a cube while chasing the truth of the incident,” and “The process of approaching who the mastermind is was good because it had a sense of density.”

Regarding working with director Hur Jin-ho, he shared, “My soft movies from before came to mind first, so I was curious about what kind of rhythm he would take this time,” and “Even when filming action scenes, he filmed as if filming emotional acting for the sake of detail, so honestly, I had question marks on set. Looking at the result, it has speed and density. I was surprised myself.”

Yoo Hae-jin's screen comeback work ‘The Assassin(s)’ is currently showing in theaters nationwide.
