Uncut 4K version of Jang Sun-woo's 'Lies' set for November 11 release
The uncut 4K version of director Jang Sun-woo's controversial film 'Lies' will be released on November 11, 27 years after its original debut.
The film 'Lies' (4K Uncut Version) is scheduled to be released on November 11. According to media reports, the production has released a second poster and a teaser trailer, marking the return of director Jang Sun-woo's controversial work 'Lies' as an uncut complete version for the first time in 27 years.
The poster features a red background with intertwined figures. The English title 'LIES' and the Korean title 'Lies' are arranged vertically, accompanied by the phrase, "There are taboos that become clearer the more they are hidden..." It also poses the question, "Are you ready to cross this line in 2026?"
The teaser trailer presents "taboo" and "censorship" as its primary keywords. Using phrases and typography such as "Shook South Korea" and "The 27-year seal is finally broken," the trailer provides a condensed look at the film's history.
'Lies', which originally premiered in 1999, is based on the novel 'Lie to Me' by author Jang Jeong-il. The film depicts the relationships of characters confronting social norms and taboos, and was invited to the competition section of the 56th Venice International Film Festival. In South Korea, the film faced controversy after receiving a rating suspension twice.
While certain scenes had to be deleted for its original theatrical release in South Korea, the film will now meet audiences as a 4K uncut complete version. Attention is focused on how the film, which left a mark on Korean film history through its international film festival invitations and domestic censorship debates, will be received by audiences 27 years later.
