This episode deals with the reality of farming and fishing villages that continue their labor to produce the nation's food even under the scorching sun during this summer, which has recorded the highest temperatures ever. The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts that most of our national territory, except for Gangwon Province, could become a subtropical climate by the end of the 21st century, and the production team asks whether our farming and fishing villages can continue to be maintained as a pillar for producing the nation's food amidst the growing importance of food security internationally.
Hot Seas and Changing Lands
Fishing vessels engaged in longline hairtail fishing off the coast of Jeju Island were found to have nearly halved their catch compared to three years ago. With the added burden of fuel prices and labor costs for foreign sailors, the number of days resulting in deficits is increasing. In the waters of Jeju Island, tropical corals and fish are surging, but this situation does not help the fishermen's income, and the subtropical points observed in our country are moving north from Jeju through the South Sea to Uljin and Gangneung. Changes continue on land as the number of farms growing olive trees in open fields on Jeju Island and growing subtropical fruits in inland greenhouses increases, while the cultivation areas for apples, pears, peaches, grapes, and summer Chinese cabbage, which used to grow on our land, are rapidly shrinking.
Disappearing Successors of Farming and Fishing Villages
The number of fishing vessels under the jurisdiction of the Pohang Guryongpo Fisheries Cooperative has decreased by more than half, from 961 vessels in 2000 to 406 vessels in 2026. As the catch decreases, there are no young captains or chief engineers at all who want to learn the work. In rural areas, young agricultural managers aged 40 or younger account for only 5.5% of the total, and the labor shortage is becoming increasingly severe.
The production team traveled to farming and fishing villages across the country in the scorching sun of July and August to capture the voices of those guarding the production sites. In farming and fishing villages facing the risk of extinction, as elderly people in their 70s and 80s step back from the production sites, the reality of a serious shortage of the next generation to succeed them is highlighted.
