KBS 1TV's Current Affairs Planning Window will broadcast the episode 'Under the Scorching Sun' on the 25th (Tuesday) at 10 PM. This episode covers the reality of rural and fishing villages that continue their labor to produce the nation's food even under the scorching sun during this summer, which recorded the highest temperatures ever. The Korea Meteorological Administration predicts that most of our territory, excluding Gangwon-do, could become subtropical by the end of the 21st century, and the production team asks whether our rural areas can continue to be maintained as the backbone of producing the nation's food amidst the growing importance of food security internationally.
Hot Seas and Changing Lands
It was found that fishing vessels engaged in longline hairtail fishing off the coast of Jeju Island have seen their catch decrease by nearly half compared to three years ago. With the burden of fuel prices and labor costs for foreign crew members combined, the number of days resulting in deficits is increasing. While tropical corals and fish are surging in the waters of Jeju, this situation does not help the fishermen's income, and the subtropical points observed in South Korea are moving north from Jeju through the South Sea to Uljin and Gangneung. Changes continue on land as well; while olive trees grow in open fields in Jeju and the number of farms growing subtropical fruits in inland greenhouses is increasing, the cultivation areas for apples, pears, peaches, grapes, and summer cabbage, which traditionally grew on our land, are rapidly shrinking.
Disappearing Successors in Rural and Fishing Villages
The number of fishing vessels under the jurisdiction of the Pohang Guryongpo Fisheries Cooperative has decreased by more than half, from 961 vessels in 2000 to 406 vessels in 2026. As the catch decreases, there are no young captains or engineers at all who want to learn the work. In rural areas, the shortage of manpower is becoming increasingly severe, as young agricultural managers aged 40 or younger account for only 5.5% of the total.
The production team traveled to rural and fishing villages across the country in the scorching sun of July and August to capture the voices of those guarding the production sites. In rural and fishing villages facing the risk of extinction, as elderly people in their 70s and 80s step back from the production sites, the reality of a serious shortage of the next generation to follow them is highlighted.
