"Do you know 'OD'? : Children Trapped in Medicine"
A father with a high school-aged daughter makes it a daily routine to visit pharmacies whenever he has time. He is not there to purchase medication, but to plead with pharmacists not to sell drugs to his daughter. What exactly has happened to this family?
In the secret world of "OD" among the 1020 generation, a father witnessed the strange behavior of A-yeong (pseudonym) one day. His daughter was clutching only her phone case, complaining that her friend was not answering. Upon checking her belongings, two bottles of sleep aids were found in her bag. While the standard adult dosage is one pill per day, A-yeong (pseudonym) had consumed approximately twenty pills. This is "overdose," or "OD"—the act of consuming medication in amounts exceeding the prescribed dosage. While tracing the reasons why his daughter fell into OD, the father encountered an OD community on social media. In this community, which has more than 5,000 members ranging from elementary school students to people in their early to mid-20s, drug information and consumption reviews are shared like a game. True Story Expedition, which set out to investigate the situation, received approximately 200 reports, more than half of which were from minors.
Life-threatening 'OD': Children swallowing death. Hye-ri (pseudonym), who recently became an adult, started OD at the age of 14. Due to repeated overdoses, she was taken to the emergency room about ten times, and eventually suffered cardiac arrest, only waking up after seven days. Despite surviving those life-threatening moments, she has continued OD until recently. Informants met by the production team also appeal that they cannot escape addiction. They report consuming a minimum of 10 pills at once, and as many as nearly 80 pills.
Why do children start OD, and why can they not quit even at the risk of their lives? MBC's True Story Expedition investigates the secret and dangerous world of OD among the 1020 generation, broadcasting tonight (Thursday the 29th) at 9 PM.
