KBS 1TV 'Mysteries of the Human Body' will be broadcast on the 26th (Wed) at 10 PM with the theme 'Cervical Myelopathy That Causes Paralysis.' This episode examines cervical myelopathy, which hides behind seemingly common symptoms such as hand numbness or abnormal walking.

Abnormal signals starting from the hands and feet

Kim Yong-ok (69), who has lived an active life enjoying tennis and table tennis, thought the cramping and numbness in his left sole were due to blood circulation problems. He dismissed the numbness spreading to his hands as a mere neck disc issue, but examinations revealed that the spinal cord was being compressed inside his neck. Kim Hang-mu (75) experienced symptoms such as being unable to open side dish containers and losing his former dexterity with chopsticks, eventually having to put down the tennis racket he had used for over 30 years. An MRI examination confirmed spinal cord compression in the upper cervical spine.

Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament hidden behind a disc

Heo Hyeon-uk (52), who has been treated for a long time for a neck disc and turtle neck syndrome, experienced worsening hand numbness and a noticeable thinning of one arm. Even when trying to stand on his tiptoes, he could not put strength into his legs. The cause revealed in the examination was Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament (OPLL), where the posterior longitudinal ligament in the neck area hardens like bone, narrowing the space through which the spinal cord passes.

Concerns surrounding the timing of treatment

Gong Eok-sik (70) had lost strength in his hands and even became insensitive in the soles of his feet, but he delayed treatment out of fear of surgery. He only decided to seek treatment after seeing his son, who had undergone surgery and recovered from cervical myelopathy in the same area. The production team conveys that once spinal cord damage has progressed significantly, functions may not fully return even after treatment, making it more important than anything else to protect the remaining nerves now.
