MBC [100-Minute Debate] <“Where is the bottom?”.. The future of the Korean stock market?>
Broadcast: Tonight (20th) at 11:20 PM
A nightmare scenario is repeating itself in the Korean stock market. The KOSPI has plummeted by more than 20% in just the last seven trading days, a decline that some analysts say is comparable to the global financial crisis or the COVID-19 pandemic. How can one explain the current state of the Korean market, which aimed for the "dream" of 10,000 points in the first half of this year, only to see the 6,000 level collapse again for the second time in three months following July?
While there are significant concerns regarding the peak of semiconductor stocks due to controversies over AI profitability and fears of interest rate hikes driven by surging inflation in the United States, these factors do not fully explain why the Korean market's decline has been even larger than those of Japan and Taiwan. Although China's largest DRAM manufacturer, CXMT, has emerged as a competitive variable for Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, the next-generation DRAM technology they intend to commercialize still faces many hurdles before reaching commercialization.
As the stock market boom led by large semiconductor stocks cools down rapidly, retail investors find themselves in a dilemma, unable to sell due to massive losses yet finding it difficult to hold on through the market crash. With rising international oil prices and pressure for interest rate hikes in the United States, combined with the approaching earnings announcements of U.S. big tech companies and the U.S. midterm elections, what will the future trend of the Korean stock market look like?
The MBC [100-Minute Debate] airing tonight (20th) at 11:20 PM will be conducted under the theme <“Where is the bottom?”.. The future of the Korean stock market?>. Participants include Hanyang University Professor Park Jae-geun of the School of Convergence Electronic Engineering, Sogang University Professor Heo Jun-yeong of the Department of Economics, economic commentator Yoon Ji-ho, and Kim Hyo-jin, a research official at Shinyoung Securities Research Center.
