National Orchestra of Korean Traditional Music to Perform 'Chronicle of Collaboration' on September 18… Featuring Lee Yong-gu and Kim Duk-soo Samulnori Group

The National Orchestra of Korean Traditional Music (Artistic Director and Director Chae Chi-seong), an exclusive group of the National Theatre (Acting Director Kim Seok-il), will perform Orchestral Series I 'Chronicle of Collaboration' at the National Theatre Haeoreum Grand Theater on September 18.

The National Theatre announced that this is the first regular performance of the National Orchestra of Korean Traditional Music for the 2026-2027 National Theatre Repertory Season, and it will examine the changes and flows of Korean traditional orchestral music and Korean creative music over the past half century through five collaborative pieces representing each era from the 1970s to the 2020s.

1970s–80s, Expansion of Traditional Expression

The performance will open with 'Sound of Bamboo Wind' (1978) composed by the late Lee Sang-gyu. Inspired by the poem of the same name by poet Shin Seok-jeong, Lee Yong-gu, a practitioner of the National Intangible Heritage Daegeum Sanjo, will perform as the Daegeum soloist.

The piece representing the 1980s is the third movement of Park Bum-hun's Samulnori Concerto 'Sinmodeum' (1986). As a work that combines Korean traditional orchestra with Samulnori, the Kim Duk-soo Samulnori Group will take the stage.

1990s and After, Meeting New Instruments

The work from the 1990s is the Saenghwang Concerto 'Punghyang' (1997) by the late Lee Jun-ho, featuring Saenghwang performer Kim Hyo-young as the soloist.

For the period after the 2000s, Kim Hyeong-seop, a practitioner of the National Intangible Heritage Jongmyo Jeryeak, will perform Donald Womack's Sanjo Gayageum Concerto 'Scattered Rhythms' (2016), and Choi Jihye's Cello Concerto 'Mi-so' (2022) will feature cellist Hong Jin-ho as the soloist. 'Mi-so' is a work depicting the life of medical missionary Rosetta Sherwood Hall.

Performance Overview

The National Theatre explained that conductor Park Chun-ji will take the baton to weave the half-century flow of Korean traditional orchestra into a narrative through collaboration.
