TV Animal Farm: Bom-i's Unstoppable Coughing... Method Acting Twist Hits 4.6% Peak Rating
SBS's 'TV Animal Farm' revealed the story of a dog named Bom-i whose persistent coughing turned out to be a learned behavior to gain attention…
On the broadcast on the 23rd, SBS 'TV Animal Farm' introduced the story of Bom-i, a puppy who could hardly stop coughing. The broadcast recorded a viewership rating of 4.1% and a peak rating of 4.6% (based on Nielsen Korea metropolitan area households). Behind Bom-i's coughing, which could not find a cause even after various tests such as CT scans and endoscopies, a surprising reason was hidden.
Unknown Coughing, Hospital Tests to No Use
Bom-i began coughing in mid-March this year. The family visited several hospitals to find the cause and even underwent CT and endoscopy examinations. Despite taking bronchial supplements and using nebulizers, the coughing did not stop easily. However, a strange pattern repeated where the coughing stopped completely when walking by the seaside outside, but started again upon returning home.
Family's Efforts and Revealed Clues
The family maintained a humidity of 60% by running humidifiers even in Jeju during midsummer and removed all fragrant products that could be irritating. They even replaced their vacuum cleaner with a product that sucks up fine dust. After discovering that the coughing subsided when the mother held Bom-i upright, the family wondered if it was a signal to be held, but the coughing continued even when no one was around. Eventually, it led to a situation where the mother carried Bom-i in a baby carrier and waited all night while holding her for the coughing to subside.
The Real Reason Revealed by an Expert
When the possibility of psychological factors was mentioned at the hospital, a pet behavior expert visited Bom-i's home. The expert noted that Bom-i does not wake up because of the coughing, but rather starts coughing after waking up, meaning the sequence does not match. It was analyzed that Bom-i experienced separation after the grandmother, who frequently held her, left for a nursing home, and subsequently learned how to gain attention through coughing after experiencing the family's attention and embrace following an accidental cough. The solution was for the mother to not react to Bom-i's coughing and disappear under the blanket, and when actually applied, the coughing stopped. Instead, Bom-i began to attract attention in other ways, such as barking or urinating. The mother expressed her intention to take good care of Bom-i and share updates.
Viewer Reactions
After the broadcast, reactions such as "The acting is very high level," "It's so cute that it was all acting," and "Animals that cannot speak can also express what they want through actions" continued on communities and SNS.
