A specialized center for 'Vocal Wing,' a customized oral device worn while singing to help improve vocalization abilities, will officially open at Park Tower in Yongsan, Seoul, on November 9.
Vocal Wing is a new concept of oral device developed by integrating orthodontics with voice medicine and phonetics. It was designed and engineered by Director Park So-yeon (Yonsei Plus Dental Clinic), an orthodontist who majored in vocal music at Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School and has maintained consistent musical activities. The structure and application of the device have been further developed by combining her professional understanding of oral structures and vocal experience with the extensive stage experience, vocal education, and research of Dr. Kwon Young-ho, a tenor who majored in voice medicine at medical school and served as a regular member of a German opera company for approximately 30 years.
The development of Vocal Wing began with the perspective that "for a singer, the mouth is an instrument." While voice begins with the vibration of the vocal cords, the final characteristics of the sound depend on the structure of the vocal tract, such as the oral cavity and pharynx, and the resonance space. Based on these principles, the device is designed to change the oral structure and acoustic environment to increase the efficiency and stability of vocalization.
Vocal Wing is a removable device precisely manufactured 1:1 to match an individual's teeth and oral structure. It aims to create an oral environment favorable for vocalization by forming new spaces between the teeth and oral soft tissues, such as the cheeks and lips, and changing the position and movement of those soft tissues. Made of transparent material, it is not easily visible during singing and is designed to minimize discomfort in pronunciation.
A key feature is that the design can vary to support different vocal characteristics, such as reinforcing low-range chest voice or high-range head voice, depending on the shape and space design of the device. Through this, it seeks to improve overall vocal ability, including low and high-range resonance, the connection between vocal ranges, and the stability and efficiency of vocalization.
For young vocalists, Vocal Wing can serve as an effective vocal education tool while supporting the improvement of vocal abilities. Additionally, positive changes have been observed in middle-aged and older vocalists who find it difficult to maintain the voice and vocal abilities of their prime due to aging. Some users have reported re-experiencing the rich resonance and comfortable vocal sensations of the past, showing new possibilities for compensating for vocal abilities that have changed with age.
HUWING Co., Ltd., the developer of Vocal Wing, explained that the device is not simply one that expands the space in the mouth, but one that designs the acoustic environment of the oral cavity by considering an individual's oral structure and vocal characteristics. The goal is to help users experience changes in vocalization through the device and learn new vocal sensations so that they can ultimately achieve better vocalization without the device. They added that it aims to be a new educational tool to be used alongside vocal lessons rather than replacing existing ones.
The newly opening Yongsan Vocal Wing Center will operate on a pre-reservation basis. The process will proceed systematically, starting with in-depth consultations to identify individual musical activities and vocal characteristics, followed by the comparison and selection of various test devices, and finally the production of the customized device. Educational programs to assist with device adaptation and vocal application will also be provided.
Vocal Wing is not a medical device but an oral device for vocalization assistance and education. It is intended for professional vocalists in various genres—including vocal music, practical music, musicals, and traditional Korean music—as well as music students and anyone wishing to develop their vocalization more freely and efficiently.
Consultations and reservations can be found through the official Vocal Wing website (https://vocalwing.com).
