Hyundai Motor to Reveal Two New Works by Ho Tzu Nyen Connecting New York and Ulsan in October

Hyundai Motor announced on the 22nd that the second exhibition of the 'Hyundai Translocal Series', 《Hyundai Translocal Series: Ho Tzu Nyen》, will be held sequentially at the New Museum in New York, United States, from September 24 (Thursday, local time) to January 24, 2027 (Sunday), and at the Ulsan Art Museum from October 22 (Thursday, Korean time) to February 21, 2027 (Sunday).

'Hyundai Translocal Series' is a project that presents joint exhibitions through mutual cooperation between domestic and international art institutions.

By broadly supporting the entire process of exchange, including joint research, new work commissions, exhibitions, linked programs, and publications between domestic and international art institutions, Hyundai Motor is creating a venue to jointly explore translocal themes that art institutions with different regional backgrounds commonly focus on and to seek new possibilities for art.

《Hyundai Translocal Series: Ho Tzu Nyen》 is the second exhibition following the first exhibition of the series last September, and it is the first collaborative project between the New Museum and the Ulsan Art Museum, which have been continuing their cooperation since 2025.

This exhibition is a site-specific project connecting New York and Ulsan, proposing a differentiated exhibition experience under intersecting themes based on the architectural and cultural contexts of each museum and city.

Ho Tzu Nyen, selected as the first artist for the collaborative exhibition between the New Museum and the Ulsan Art Museum, was born in Singapore in 1976 and has explored Asian modernity and multi-layered cultural identities through various media such as film, video, sound, and multimedia installation.

In particular, based on a deep understanding of cultures spanning East and West, the artist has proposed complex and multifaceted perspectives on history, narrative, and the ways in which they are transmitted by intersecting mythical narratives with historical facts.

First, at the New Museum, the new work 〈P for Power: Up Down〉(2026) will be presented, installed on the glass elevator screens of the museum's new wing to organically connect the inside and outside of the museum.

When viewers press the elevator button, a life-sized young protagonist appears on the screen as a video, delivering questions, riddles, and meditative phrases regarding power that operates in various forms today, leading the audience to reflect on the multi-layered meanings of power with a new perspective.

The video appearing on the screen is sophisticatedly and newly composed by an AI-based algorithm to match the travel time whenever the elevator movement button is pressed.

This constantly changing nature of the work aligns with the artist's worldview, which views history not as a completed fact, but as a collision and intersection of powers that are continuously rewritten and newly emerging.

In addition, at the XR Lab, a dedicated media art hall at the Ulsan Art Museum, another new work 〈P for Power: Double Life of P〉(2026) will be presented starting from October 22 (Thursday).

This work will be implemented as a multi-channel immersive installation utilizing the 24 projectors and three-dimensional sound system of the XR Lab, and data on industry, technology, matter, and sound collected in Ulsan will be used as elements to constitute the work's database.

Through this exhibition connecting New York and Ulsan, the artist plans to illuminate power not just by looking at it within the realms of politics and technology, but as a dynamic object created by continuity, change, and new possibilities.

This 《Hyundai Translocal Series: Ho Tzu Nyen》 exhibition was co-curated by Massimiliano Gioni, Director of the New Museum, Gary Carrion-Murayari, Senior Curator, and Taeyi Kim, Curatorial Fellow, and Lim Chang-seop, Director of the Ulsan Art Museum, and Kwon Kyung-ah, Curator.

Meanwhile, starting with this exhibition, the two museums plan to present a total of three jointly curated exhibitions once a year until 2028, focusing on the convergence of art and technology, and will jointly explore contemporary agendas where art and technology, cities and humans, and locality and globality meet, based on the environmental and cultural contexts of New York and Ulsan.
