According to media reports, the movie 'Lies' (4K Uncut Complete Edition) will be re-released on November 11. This work meets the audience as an uncut complete edition for the first time in 27 years since its theatrical release in 2000. Director Jang Sun-woo was in charge of directing and screenwriting.
The movie is based on the novel 'Lie to Me' by Jang Jeong-il. It is a story about J, a married furniture designer in his 30s, and Y, a high school student in her teens, who try to escape daily life through each other's physical pain, but their relationship and reality reach a catastrophe amidst growing obsession and desire.
Controversy arose following the publication of the novel in 1996. Debates regarding the depiction of sexual content continued, and the Press Arbitration Commission ruled the work as an obscene book. The following year, author Jang Jeong-il was sentenced to 10 months in prison and taken into custody on charges of manufacturing obscene documents. The debate surrounding the work's literary value and social harm expanded into the boundary between freedom of creation and regulation of expression.
The movie 'Lies' was invited to the competition section of the Venice International Film Festival in 1999. In Korea, there was controversy surrounding the screening rating and editing, and after two instances of rating suspension, a version with some scenes deleted was screened in theaters in 2000. The debate over the level of expression that began with the novel continued during the movie's release process.
This screening is an opportunity to present the work again as an uncut complete edition, which was previously blocked by censorship and social norms. Through the 4K restored version, it is expected to be a chance to examine the expression and direction of the work and to view it again through the eyes of the audience, which have changed since the release in 2000. The questions the movie deals with regarding the boundary between desire and pleasure, pain and destruction, will also be faced again through this re-release.
Ahead of the release, a Tumblbug project to meet the audience is underway, and participation is possible until October 22. Rewards include tickets to the premiere eve screening and a special poster of the uncut complete edition, as well as special group screenings by region.
