The Korean Film Critics Awards, co-hosted by the Korean Association of Film Critics and the Korean Film Archive, was held on September 4 at Cinematheque KOFA in Mapo-gu, Seoul. During the ceremony, director Park Bong-nam received the Independent Film Support Award (Documentary category) for '1980 Sabuk'.
In his acceptance speech, Park Bong-nam said, "I worked with the mindset of digging out a piece of the truth from a pitch-black mine shaft to reveal it to the world." He added, "I am grateful to the Sabuk miners and their families who remained as witnesses," and noted that he would "cherish today as an opportunity to think about how to live the remaining time as a documentary director."
'1980 Sabuk' is a documentary that multi-dimensionally tracks the miners' general strike, violent suppression, and the controversy surrounding torture investigations that occurred at the Dongwon Coal Mine Sabuk Mining Office in Sabuk-eup, Jeongseon, in April 1980. The film received high acclaim for recording the tragedies and wounds that occurred during the struggle.
Meanwhile, 'The King's Warden', starring actor Park Ji-hoon, was selected as the winner for Best New Actor. Park Ji-hoon was unable to attend the ceremony due to overseas schedules. Both works were included in the 'Yeongpyeong Top 10 Films of the Year'.
