The girl group RESCENE has become the first celebrity to be named an honorary citizen of Geoje City in Gyeongsangnam-do.
Geoje City announced on the 26th that it presented honorary citizenship certificates to RESCENE at the Hanwha Resort Geoje Belvedere on the 24th.
While honorary citizens of Geoje have previously included foreign ship owners and medical professionals, this marks the first time a celebrity has been included on the list.
RESCENE gained attention by spreading the "Geoje Yahoo" meme that went viral online, which led to their appointment as promotional ambassadors for Geoje City this past May.
Since then, they have promoted Geoje's tourism resources and regional charms through various content, and the Geoje City Council passed the proposal for the honorary citizenship submitted by the city last month.
As member WONI is a native of Geoje, the group also delivered donations and relief supplies under their fandom name to assist with recovery from heavy rain damage that occurred in the region this past August.
“I am grateful for their consistent promotional activities driven by a deep affection for Geoje,” said Geoje Mayor Byeon Gwang-yong. “Thanks to the activities of RESCENE, we were able to promote Geoje to various generations and draw more interest.”
