Visa delays force postponement of TAEMIN tour and KPWORLD Festival

Visa delays for essential staff and artists have caused significant disruptions to major entertainment events in the US, including TAEMIN's North American tour and the KPWORLD Festival. The series' first overseas performance for the Umamusume: Pretty Derby IP was also canceled in Los Angeles due to the inability to secure US visas.

US visa issuance issues have forced the postponement of TAEMIN's North American tour and the KPWORLD Festival in San Antonio to 2027. The delays follow the recent cancellation of the first overseas Umamusume: Pretty Derby performance in Los Angeles due to similar visa uncertainties.

Over the past month, several Korean and Japanese entertainment performances scheduled to take place in the United States have been repeatedly postponed or canceled. TAEMIN's North American tour was delayed due to delays in visa issuance for core tour and production staff, while the major K-pop festival KPWORLD Festival was postponed to 2027 due to uncertainty regarding visa procurement for some overseas artists. Additionally, the first overseas performance for the popular Japanese IP Umamusume: Pretty Derby was canceled in Los Angeles because visas could not be obtained. These cases highlight how visa procedures for artists, staff, and performers can disrupt schedules even after venues, lineups, and ticket sales have been finalized.

TAEMIN North American Tour Postponed as Staff Visa Timing Remains Uncertain

On September 29, TAEMIN announced via official social media (SNS) the postponement of his 2026-27 TAEMIN WORLD TOUR North American leg. The tour was originally scheduled to begin on October 12 at the SAP Center in San Jose, USA, and visit six cities, including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Grand Prairie, Chicago, and Newark. The schedule change was announced just two weeks before the first performance. TAEMIN's side clarified that the reason for the delay was not the singer's own visa, but rather the visas required for the tour and production personnel for the North American shows.

“A significant number of core tour and production staff required for the North American performances are still waiting for visas, and there is no clear schedule for when they will be issued,” TAEMIN's side explained. “We determined that proceeding with the tour as planned would entail significant operational and production risks.” Instead of canceling the shows, they are coordinating new dates and locations, noting that existing tickets can be refunded through the original point of purchase. The Seattle performance, which was scheduled separately from the North American tour, was also affected. According to reports, the finale of K-Era Fest, where TAEMIN was set to appear as a headliner on October 25 at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, has been canceled. An exhibition and sales event for 31 Korean brands planned to be held alongside the event has also been pushed back to the spring of 2027.

KPWORLD Festival Postponed to 2027 Instead of Reducing Lineup

The KPWORLD Festival, which was scheduled to be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, on October 30–31, was also postponed to 2027 just about a month before its opening. The lineup included Jay Park, The Rose, Jessi, CRAVITY, Xdinary Heroes, ARTMS, and Wonho. Tickets had been sold ranging from $100 for general admission to a $1,200 Super VIP package for a 2-day pass. The organizers cited uncertainty over whether visas for some overseas artists could be secured in time.

“Despite mobilizing all means, including expedited processing, it is uncertain whether visas for some overseas artists can be secured in time,” the organizers stated. “This is a matter beyond the control of the artists, their agencies, and the festival itself.” Rather than proceeding with a reduced lineup, they decided to postpone the event, explaining, “To show the performances promised to fans, moving it to 2027 was the most responsible decision.” Existing ticket holders will be provided with a pre-sale code that can be used before the general sale of the rescheduled festival. The following is a summary of how TAEMIN's North American tour and KPWORLD Festival faced disruptions due to visa issues:

Umamusume's First Overseas Performance Canceled Three Days Before Opening

In Japan, the Los Angeles performance of Umamusume: Pretty Derby has fallen through. The performance, which was scheduled to take place at the Peacock Theater on the 22nd and 23rd local time, was set to feature 17 voice actors. Although prepared as the series' first overseas performance, the decision to cancel was made just three days before the opening.

On the 19th, the organizers announced that despite preparations made over half a year with the cooperation of local lawyers and promoters, visa approval had not been granted. On the 20th, they stated, “Due to the inability to obtain the necessary US visas for the performance, we had no choice but to abandon the performance after much deliberation.” The specific reasons for the visa denials were not disclosed. Refunds will be provided for local admission tickets, online streaming tickets, the official JTB tour, and live viewing. The organizers added that they are also reviewing responses for local attendees.

O and P Visa Expedited Fees Rise to $2,965 as Japanese Performance Market Expands

Longer processing times and increased costs are cited as common variables in US performance visa issues. According to NPR, artist visas were typically processed within 2 to 4 months, but waiting periods have increased due to a backlog from the pandemic and strengthened screening. Processing for O-1 visa petitions for individual artists has extended to just over one year. Since March of this year, the expedited processing fee for O and P visas has risen to $2,965, and the industry considers it a virtually essential cost. Even after a petition is approved, each performer must undergo an interview at the consulate in their home country, and the final decision on entry permission is made at the border.

Performances involve not only artists but also staff responsible for stage, lighting, and sound. For festivals with multiple teams or performances with numerous voice actors, delays in visa issuance for even a portion of the required personnel can impact operations. TAEMIN's side cited the wait for core tour and production staff, while the KPWORLD organizers stated uncertainty regarding securing visas for some overseas artists. Meanwhile, the K-pop performance market in Japan has shown growth. According to a survey by the Concert Promoters Association (ACPC), the Japanese K-pop performance market size for 2025 is estimated at 88.3 billion yen, accounting for 13.7% of the total concert market. Arena performances by overseas artists reached 464, a 24.4% increase from the previous year. Among 10 spectators who watched overseas artists in Japan in 2024, six watched Korean artists.

During the last weekend of April, TVXQ drew 130,000 people over two days at Yokohama Nissan Stadium, setting a new record for the most performances by an overseas singer. TWICE became the first overseas singer to perform at the Japan National Stadium, and aespa met approximately 94,000 people over two days at the Tokyo Dome. Lee Gi-hoon, a researcher at Hana Financial Investment, analyzed, “If a US tour is strongly characterized as an investment to enhance global status, a Japan tour serves as a cash cow that generates actual operating profits through high audience mobilization and goods sales.”

TAEMIN's side is currently coordinating new dates and locations for the North American tour, while KPWORLD has not announced a new schedule. The Umamusume World Tour is expected to continue with performances in London, Seoul, and Yokohama. The date and location for the Seoul performance, which will be the first stage in Korea, will be announced later. Refund procedures for the LA performance's admission, streaming tickets, and official tours are also underway.
