According to media reports, Dexter Studios will invest in and participate in the production of the third installment in the 'Along with the Gods' series, titled 'Along with the Gods: Life and Death.' Directed by Kim Yong-hwa, the project is being prepared with the goal of beginning filming in the second half of 2027. The story will be set in 'Nine Heavens,' a place where souls who have not yet reached the afterlife reside.
At the center of the story is Sol-i, who stands suspended between life and death. Sol-i travels through nine worlds in search of a song that could not be sung. The previous two films depicted a soul being judged in seven hells over 49 days and the thousand-year connection between the three grim reapers of the afterlife.
'Along with the Gods' became the first South Korean film series to have both its first and second installments surpass 10 million viewers. 'Along with the Gods: Sin and Punishment' recorded 14.41 million viewers, while 'Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days' recorded 12.27 million. On its opening day, 'Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days' drew 1,246,692 viewers, setting the record for the highest opening score for a South Korean film. The two films ranked first and second among all-time highest-grossing South Korean films in Taiwan. Furthermore, 'Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days' set the highest opening score for a South Korean film at the time of its release in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The series has also received Best Director, Technical, and Visual Effects awards at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, Grand Bell Awards, Baeksang Arts Awards, Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, and Film of the Year Awards.
In addition to investing in the new film, Dexter Studios will handle the entirety of post-production, including VFX (visual special effects), DI (digital intermediate), and sound design and mixing. During the production of the first two films, the company applied VFX to more than 90% of all scenes and managed the entire post-production process.
Dexter Studios CEOs Kim Wook and Kang Jong-ik stated, "The 'Along with the Gods' series is a monumental project that proved how a movie can be widely loved by the public by combining South Korea's VFX technology with a high-quality IP." They continued, "Once again, we will complete a story and visuals that only we can create, presenting a K-movie that possesses both the entertainment and artistry to become a mega-hit in the global market."
