∎ 2026 PBI Seoul Summit one month away… Major public media leaders including BBC, NHK, and FTV to attend ∎ Singer Psy, Yu Hong-jun (Director of National Museum of Korea), and Kim Seong-han (CEO of Coupang Play) to highlight everything from traditional culture to K-pop and global OTT

As the ‘2026 Public Broadcasters International (PBI) Seoul Summit’ hosted by KBS approaches in one month, top executives from major global public media outlets, including the UK's BBC, Japan's NHK, and France Télévisions (FTV), have confirmed their attendance.

Psy to give special lecture on ‘The Success and Future of K-pop’

In particular, Psy, who caused a worldwide syndrome with ‘Gangnam Style’ in 2012, will speak based on his own experience regarding the secrets and strategies of how content originating from a single nation's culture could transcend language and border barriers to become a culture for people worldwide.

Furthermore, he will share his thoughts with global public media leaders on what conditions are necessary for K-pop to establish itself as a sustainable global culture beyond a temporary fad, and what role media should play in that process.

Yu Hong-jun to speak on ‘Cultural Heritage’ and Kim Seong-han on ‘Global OTT’ as special speakers

Yu Hong-jun, Director of the National Museum of Korea, plans to lecture on what role public media should play as a cultural institution that records, preserves, and transmits a nation's history and culture to the next generation, citing examples such as the 1.1 million hours of broadcasting Archive held by KBS.

Kim Seong-han, CEO of Coupang Play, will present on the theme of ‘Digital Platforms and the Future of Public Media.’ In a situation where global OTT and AI-based algorithms are fundamentally changing the media ecosystem, he plans to present a vision for how public media and digital platforms can move beyond competition to cooperate and coexist.

President Park Jang-bum: “Sharing Hallyu and AI innovation experiences despite financial pressure”

Park Jang-bum, President of KBS and Chair of the PBI Seoul Summit, stated, “Despite difficult financial conditions, such as the monthly license fee of 2,500 won which has been frozen for 45 years, KBS has led the spread of Hallyu and spearheaded AI innovation.” He added, “As we are hosting the Seoul Summit at the request of major global public broadcasters, we will do our utmost to make this a place where we share KBS's production capabilities and experience, and seek future-oriented and productive solutions amidst the political and financial pressures faced by public media in each country.”

Discussions on ‘The Role of Public Media for National Cultural Development’… KBS Archive special exhibition and Music Bank also to be held

The summit, held for three days starting from the 14th of next month at the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul and the National Museum of Korea, will consist of a total of five sessions under the main theme of ‘The Role of Public Media for National Cultural Development.’

On the final day, the 16th, a KBS broadcasting Archive special exhibition and a special live broadcast of KBS's K-pop signature ‘Music Bank’ will be held at the National Museum of Korea.

Global public media leaders from BBC, NHK, FTV, etc., gather in Seoul

Established in 1990, Public Broadcasters International (PBI) is a consultative body of public media CEOs that holds annual meetings to discuss major issues and the future. KBS is the only full member in South Korea, and about 60 major global public media organizations, including the UK's BBC, Japan's NHK, France Télévisions, Canada's CBC, and Australia's ABC, participate.
